DIY Project – Inspiration BoardsThursday, January 28th, 2010Some brides make scrapbooks of their wedding planning experience, others make inspiration boards, tearing out pages of magazines and printing off ideas. We love the idea of using these inspiration boards themselves for decor in your wedding reception. You can intersperse any photos you have of you and your fiance into the boards as well! It not only shows off your creativity, but these board make great conversation pieces!
Here’s what you’ll need: • Any “inspiration” that you find–magazine tear outs, print offs, paint swatches from the hardware store, fabric samples, brooches or decorative pieces that you are planning on using in your wedding. • Decorative thumb tacks (You can use the same thumb tacks from Monday’s DIY project!) • Framed Corkboards (Again these can be more of the corkboards that you used in Monday’s post, or you can find others with decorative frames that you spray paint the same color) • Pictures of you and your fiance, your bridesmaids, parents, family, planning process, bridals shows, DIY parties, bridal showers–make it personal!! 1. Organize everything you want to place on your corkboards into neat little piles so that you can see what all you have to place. (we organized ours by colors, but you may want to place all the photos together or organize everything by relative sizes.) Orient your cork boards so that the hanging hooks are at the top. (We may have forgotten this step when we did ours, and had to redo the entire inspiration board…thankfully only one was oriented incorrectly.) 2.Place the larger photos or magazine pieces on the corkboard first. Fabric swatches are great here too, since they provide a background to all your other materials. 3. Gradually layer your other materials on the boards until you are happy with the placement of everything. 4. Use your pins to secure everything into place. DIY Project – Floral CenterpiecesWednesday, January 27th, 2010We got so many comments on these little centerpieces that we thought we should share how incredibly easy they are!
• Small plastic crystals (We used both pink and white, of course since we are the Pink Ladies) • Small glass votive vases • Medium to large blooms** 1. On the day of, pour crystals into your vases until about half full. 2. Trim the stems of the flowers until the bloom just peeks out of the vase. 3. Arrange two or three blooms in each vase. And place on the tables. **You can use real or fake flowers for these votives. This projects cannot be done in advance if you do decide to use fresh flowers. So use your common sense as to whether you will have time to finish these. If not, you can ask your florist to make these for you. If you decide to use real flowers, fill the vases with some water and add a pinch of flower food, to keep the flowers fresher for longer. You can find this at any local florist shop or craft store with a fresh flower section. DIY Project – Tulle Pom PomsTuesday, January 26th, 2010Our second installment of DIY week is our tulle pom poms. These cute little poms poms can be used in several different ways and are very inexpensive. They can be hung individually from the ceiling or they can be strung together to make garland. We of course made ours in two different shades of pink but crafts stores carry all different colors and shades. Supply List: Spool of tulle – six inches wide 4″x6″ piece of card stock Fabric coated wire Scissors and wire cutters Fishing line and needle Rhinestones and hot glue gun (optional) Directions: Cut a piece of tulle two and half yards long. We found that after you measure out the first piece, laying it on the floor and using it to measure out the rest of the pieces saved a lot of time. Wrap the piece of tulle all the way around the 4″x6″ piece of card stock. Slide tulle off of the card stock making sure to keep it folded. Cut your fabric wire in 3 inch pieces. Wrap the 3 inch piece of wire around the middle of the folded piece of tulle. Carefully slide scissors through the bow loops and cut. We found it easier to get the scissors through the bow loop if you used your finger as a guide. So we just slide our index finger through the loop and that made it easier to get the scissors through the loop to cut. Once both sides are cut, pull pieces of tulle towards the center. After you have finished fluffing and shaping your pom pom, you can add rhinestones. Put a dot of glue on the back of the rhinestone and quickly stick to pom pom. We used about eight rhinestones per pom pom. To hang thread your needle with the fishing line and knot at end. Thread through the center of the pom pom and hang. To make garland thread your needle with fishing line and knot at end. String the pom poms on the fishing line and then knot the other end when you have reached your desired length. |
